Jewelry Box Project

Jewelry Boxes

So I’m a dork but I really love to make boxes, boxes of all kinds. So I am taking on the endeavor of making jewelry/keepsake boxes for all my nieces. (This will be a  revolving post till they are all finished).

Jewelry Boxes

Round 1:

So here are the first 2 boxes that I made for my nieces in Omaha NE.

They are a 4 layer (3/4 ” layers)

The two center layers were glued together then the  compartment was  using the scroll saw my awesome wife bought for me.. then of course copious amounts of sanding had to happen because I cant cut straight.

Then I glued the bottom layer on and clamped and there they sat for a while.

I attached the tops with some small finishing nails ( two in opposite corners) so that i could get the  sanding and the routered edges to be the same on both the body and the lid.

I patched those whole with a little wood filler before the final sanding and staining.

I then attached the hardware and drove them All the way to Omaha to deliver.

Round 2:

Round two was fun and Exciting. I had some time this week white the wife was out of town so here we are.

Jewelry boxes for the nices. Then center Between the dowels was cut out using a 4 inch hole saw for the out side diameter and a 3 inch for the inside, put the two pieces together with some wood glue and finishing nails. and stained with Java gel stain

For the top pieces and the lid, I cut 1X6 squares from a board and screwed them together, then i spun them on the lathe so they were perfectly round. I removed the lid piece and kept the to outside pieces together while I drilled the wholes for the dowels.

Jewelry boxes for the nieces.I inserted the dowels in the bottom piece and stained with a medium finish. then aligned the center with the top piece and taped them down over the dowels, the finished the stain.

I spun out the lid Knob on the lathe as well, attached with small decorative screw and finished the stain. This little box we delivered on Friday the 27th of April to one of my Nieces in Cheyenne.

Round 3:

Round 3 Jewelry Box!This one is for the sweet Irish princess!

I took 5 – 3/4″ boards and cut them in a 8 in squares then, glued them together. I let this sit for a few days to dry. Next, I used wood screws to attach another layer to the bottom (and one to the top For the lid) so I could put it on my Lathe. Spun it all down till it was round, same size all the way around.

I removed the lid piece and spun out the center of the body. Then I took a 1″ wooden dowel  and spun out a knob for the lid

lastly I measured the opening and traced that onto the lid, then used the router to remove the material around it so it would create a lip that would rest inside the body.

A little stain and some turquoise felt and this one was ready for delivery!

Round 4:

This one is for my niece Grace and as uniquely fun to make as the others so far.

Making the Jewelry boxThis one started from 2 – 2″ thick butcher block style pieces glued together to make 1 – 5″ X 8″ X 4″ block. and also 1 for the lid.

Making the Jewelry boxOnce the glue dried. I think I let it set a day or two, I drew out the pattern I wanted on top on the ol computer and then used a jagged wheel to trace out the opening I would drill, and a hammer and nail to mark the the holes I would drill for the dowels. Off to the ol Drill press to drill the holes. I didn’t go all the way through as I wanted the bottom to be solid.

I changed out the blade to start drilling mass out of the center. This was a long an tedious process, but better that listing to the high pitched router longer than I had to. I then Built a Quick Jig to  put the router on so I could smooth out the edges from the drilling. This turned out pretty well, but some day I will have to get new router blades that are a tab bit deeper.

Making the Jewelry BoxMaking the Jewelry BoxI prepped the dowel rods, cutting them to about 2 1/2 inches, then installed the dado blade on my table saw. set the fence to  the thickness I wanted the base and the top to be. set the depth to about 3/4″ and ran the box sideways through the saw so that the middle was smaller that the outside edges.

Next step I installed the Dowels, putting a little wood glue to hold them in and taped them with a hammer jut to make sure they were snug and let them dry. I then put it through the table saw to cut off the excess. and quick run through the plainer as well and the base was done!

Making the Jewelry BoxMaking the Jewelry BoxOK So that third chuck I talked about in the first paragraph. I ran it through the plainer till it was just about 1/2 of an inch. I traced out the opening from the base on it and took the router and cleared off the  edges so it would sit down in the opening on the base. I secured the lid on with some frog tape so I could attach the hinges to it. I let it all sit for a day or two  and them i stained it all with a dark gel stain.

Not pictured but I finished the inside bottom off with some purple felt to have a soft place for  items to sit.
